How to Paint a Door and Upgrade Interior Door Handles for a Major Home Refresh
/—
If you’re looking for a simple upgrade that makes a surprisingly big impact, painting your interior doors and swapping out the interior door handles is one of the best projects you can do.
We recently gave every interior door in our home a refresh, and the difference is incredible. What used to feel basic and builder-grade now feels intentional, elevated, and perfectly aligned with the modern organic style throughout our home.
All we did was paint the doors and install new interior door handles — but the transformation made the whole house feel updated.
If you’re considering a similar project, here’s exactly what we did and how to paint a door for a clean, professional-looking finish.
Why Painting Interior Doors Makes Such a Big Impact
Doors are one of those things you see constantly but rarely think about updating. In many homes, they’re plain white with standard hardware, which can feel a little builder-basic.
Painting the doors instantly changes the visual weight of a space. It creates contrast, adds warmth, and makes the entire home feel more designed.
We painted all of our interior doors in Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore, which is one of the most versatile greige paint colors. It works beautifully with neutral palettes and complements modern organic decor really well.
Once the doors were painted and paired with new interior door handles, the whole house felt more polished.
How to Paint a Door (Step-by-Step)
If you’re wondering how to paint a door properly, the process is actually pretty straightforward. With a little prep work, you can get a smooth finish that looks professionally done.
1. Remove the hardware
Start by removing the existing door handles and any strike plates. This makes it much easier to paint cleanly and avoid brush marks around hardware.
2. Clean the door
Doors collect fingerprints, oils, and dust. Wipe the entire surface with a degreasing cleaner so the paint adheres properly.
3. Lightly sand the surface
A quick light sanding helps the paint grip better. You don’t need to remove the existing finish — just scuff it slightly.
4. Prime if needed
If your doors are glossy or previously stained, a bonding primer will help the paint adhere evenly.
5. Paint using a roller and brush
Use a small foam roller for the flat surfaces of the door to achieve a smooth finish. For the detailed areas and edges, we used a paint brush for the trim and recessed panels to make sure we could reach all the corners cleanly.
6. Allow proper drying time between coats
Let the door dry fully between coats. Two coats usually give the best coverage.
7. Allow the paint to fully cure before installing new hardware
While paint may feel dry to the touch within a few hours, it actually takes much longer to fully cure and harden. Most interior paints take about 2–4 weeks to fully cure, depending on the paint type and environmental conditions.
Because installing hardware can put pressure on the surface and potentially dent or mark the paint, we chose to wait two full weeks before installing our new interior door handles. This extra patience helps ensure the finish stays smooth and durable.
8. Install new interior door handles
Once the paint has cured, installing new hardware is the final step that completes the transformation.
The Door Handles That Completely Transformed Our Doors
These interior door handles come in three finishes: black, bronze, and satin nickel. We chose the bronze finish, which adds warmth and depth that works beautifully with neutral paint colors and modern organic decor.
Instead of the cooler look of traditional black or chrome hardware, the bronze tone feels softer and more layered, which pairs really nicely with the greige color of the doors.
The rectangular backplate also gives the handles a slightly more architectural look compared to traditional round rosettes, which helps the doors feel more custom and old-world.
