Ever since having my daughter, my live houseplants have suffered; they are last on my priority list and I often forget about them.  Combine that with the fact that our house gets direct afternoon sunlight, and our outdoor plants also suffer. Translation: I'm a plant killer.

So this spring, I've decided to surrender to my lack of a green thumb and try to find some realistic artificial plants for indoors and outdoors. I wanted foliage that looks like the real thing, so I hit up Wayfair's BIG Outdoor Sale, which is the perfect time to get your outdoor essentials.

With up to 50% off and fast shipping, it will get your patio, home, backyard, and garden ready for those warmer temperatures and sunny days. We’re talking barbecues, indoor/outdoor rugs, outdoor decor, lawn and garden accents, patio furniture, and more.

The Best Fake Plants That Look Real in 2024

I used to be against faux foliage (yes, this was before kids, a dog, and starting my own business), but fake plants have really come a long way in their appearance and the varieties that they are offered in. Ferns, fiddle leaf figs, moss, rubber trees, olive trees, succulents, and general greenery are now available in faux potted and unpotted options; they have realistic textures and some even come in ceramic pots. They no longer look fake, and they are a great alternative that can offer the same aesthetic appeal without all the upkeep.

I love using plants and flowers that look like the real deal indoors because they require almost zero upkeep (maybe some dusting whenever I remember) and you can put them in rooms that are low light like a bathroom, closet, or home office. You'll get the warm, cozy feeling that houseplants provide and you don't have to worry about killing them!

Lifelike Houseplants and Outdoor Greenery

In addition to adding some more greenery in our home that I can't kill, I wanted to add some planters to our outdoor space.  We live in a townhouse and don't have a backyard, so our rooftop patio IS our backyard. Unfortunately, it gets direct sun all day in the summer, so real plants can't survive there (trust me, I've tried).

My trick to finding the best fake plants is to choose less common plants, so when people see them, they assume they are real. I chose rosemary, eucalyptus, and a gleditsia artificial bush. Bonus: I knew that I wanted to use the realistic faux gleditsia bush outdoors, so I chose one that was treated to be UV resistant.

Of course if you'd prefer to go the more traditional route, you could choose standard plants and flowers like an orchid, ficus, rubber plants, philodendrons, cactus, or a fiddle leaf fig plant.

The Best Plastic Plant Pots that Look Real

To make indoor plants look even more real, I ordered faux terracotta pots to go with my modern organic home and patio. I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to find the perfect ones (we're talking hours) because I knew that affordable modern traditional pots had to exist - and they do! I love the fact that these ones look like terracotta, but because they are made of plastic they are actually super lightweight and affordable.

To save even more money, I ordered a set of three and a set of two, which gave me more bang for my buck. I got the Geniah 12'' 15'' 18'' Milan Series Combination Set Plastic Pots (Set of 3) in beige and the Arnault Monet Series Plastic Pot Set (Set of 2) in mocha.

Both style of planters have a modern organic, faux terracotta/stone look and feel, which goes perfectly with our transitional patio. I love that they look a little rustic, imperfect, and natural, and they are even better in person than the online photos.

How I “planted” the plants: for each planter, I put a layer of rocks at the bottom of the planter with a bunch of balled up mesh garden fence on top. Then I “planted” the faux plants and finished with moss or a layer of gardening plastic and then real dirt on top.

Bring on Spring: Artificial Plants + More

As always, I didn't stop there. I've shopped the entire Wayfair BIG Outdoor Sale to find the best items by style, trend, price, and review.  I found affordable faux ceramic plant pots, an indoor/outdoor rug, a scalloped patio umbrella, modern adirondack chairs, and more affordable home decor.

If I had to play favorites, I'm absolutely in love with the indoor/outdoor bean bag chairs - they look super luxurious, but are under $120 each. I also love the faux concrete planters because they come to around $40 each and the review photos are stunning (and the reviews are raving).

So sit back, relax, and let's get decorating on a budget.
