As I get older, I’m starting to become more aware of what’s in my beauty products.  Sure, I love that pricey moisturizer that’s on all the beauty bloggers' bathroom counters, but what’s really inside the pretty packaging (and why can’t I pronounce the ingredients)?

New products and brands land on my desk everyday, but one recently caught my attention: Beautycounter.  At first, I was attracted to the minimalist packaging, but as soon as I started learning about the brand and using the products, I was hooked.

Many of us are familiar with the potential dangers and controversy of long-term exposure to chemicals in our beauty products, but legislature in Canada is very slow to catch-up.  The European Union has banned more than 1,400 chemicals commonly found in everyday products, but Canada has banned less than half of that.

Instead of waiting for Canada to catch up, Beautycounter created their own never-list: a list of ingredients that you’ll never find in your Beautycounter buys (ingredients like animal fats, formaldehyde, and parabens).  In addition to their strict ingredient standards, they don’t test on animals - another issue I’ve become more aware of recently.  Combine all of this with a specialized product line of everyday essentials, and you’ve got yourself Beautycounter.

I’m looking at my beauty bag cleanup as a process: I’ll use up what I have and slowly start replacing key products with healthier options. In the meantime, I’ll continue to educate myself and make informed decisions on what I put on my body.
