My relationship with do-it-yourself projects is complicated.  The start of my DIY experience is always thrilling: there’s excitement, potential, and the promise of something new.  But as time passes, there’s usually a point when things start to turn sour, like the time that my fiancé and I slept on the floor for two months while we sanded and re-painted all our bedroom furniture because “it would be a fun project together.”  Right.

Now that I’m older and wiser, I choose my DIYs carefully.  I still love getting crafty, but I choose projects that don’t get so complicated and eventually cause me to fantasize about throwing them off my balcony or setting them on fire.  I’m proud to report that I’ve made 100% of the décor for my upcoming wedding (like this giant diamond card box and this sparkly banner) and if you even so much as glance at my marble jewellery trays, you’ll hear the full tutorial – whether you want to or not.

My latest project is making over a coat rack that I purchased off Craigslist.  It’s made of solid wood and when I decided it was a little bland for my liking, I chose to paint it.  I’ve re-painted furniture before (my bed, bedside tables, and dresser), so I’ve learned that painting is never as simple as it seems.  I eventually smartened up and learned three things:

1) A handheld power sander is a gift from the DIY Gods
2) After the priming incident, I save myself a step and use paint that includes a primer (and I also read the labels)
3) An end product is only as good as your tools: always invest in a good paint brush and painting tape

To choose my colour, I used the free BEHR ColourSmart by BEHR® App to preview colours and to conquer my general indecisiveness. There are over 1,000 one coat hues to choose from, so I played around with colour schemes and even saved a few colours for future DIY projects so I can coordinate paint colours. In the end, my tried, tested, and true favourites won: black and white.  My home décor and personal style is simple and sleek, so I chose Crème De La Crème MQ3-33, a soft, creamy white with grey undertones.  Since the coat rack was already black, I decided to create a dipped paint technique and started with these images for inspiration:

| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |

My first step was to sand down all the parts that I was going to paint on the coat rack.  I taped off all the areas that I wanted to preserve and then used a combination of a handheld power sander and good ol’ fashioned elbow grease and sandpaper to roughen up all the “paint dipped” sections.  Then, I painted.

I told you I like simple DIYs!  The paint didn’t seem to have much of a smell, so I painted both outdoors on my balcony and indoors while binge-watching documentaries on Netflix.  The paint went on smoothly and met Behr’s one-hour drying time listed on the can.

Before the paint dried, I carefully peeled off the tape and then once dry, re-assembled the coat rack.  There were no temper tantrums or individuals/coat racks hurt during the entire DIY process.
